How to Locate GM Paint Codes

Chipped or scratched paint can significantly reduce the appeal of an automobile's finish, and professional paint jobs can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Fortunately, it's easy to identify the exact color of your car's finish, allowing small blemishes to be fixed with relative ease. This process is especially easy with GM vehicles, which each are produced with a Service Parts Identification (SPI) sticker that contains the vehicle's paint codes.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your GM vehicle's SPI sticker by checking a series of common locations, including the glove box, spare tire cover and driver's door. SPI stickers are usually small silver or white rectangles with black lettering.

    • 2

Locate your vehicle's paint code on the SPI sticker. The codes are the numbers that directly follow "BC/CC U." BC stands for base coat. CC stands for clear coat. And U stands for upper, which may refer to trimming or other cosmetic options. Two-tone models will also have an "L" (lower) code.

    • 3

Write down all of the color codes. You may not know which code refers to the color you need until you see the color on a chart or paint can. It's a good idea to have all of the codes on hand.

    • 4

Visit an auto parts store and purchase the appropriate amount of paint.
