How to Tell a Son He Needs to Lose Weight
When it comes to the subject of weight, everyone gets a little sensitive. However, as a parent, it is your responsibility to make your child aware of a potentially harmful weight problem. While constantly shoving the problem in your son's face won't solve anything, a calm, rational and caring conversation about his weight can make a huge difference in both his current and future life. Once you have made your child aware of the issue, work together to build a healthier lifestyle.

1
Purchase a scale and put it in the family bathroom. Your son will likely weigh himself on the scale. Depending on his age, he should be able to infer whether or not his weight is above normal. If your child is young, also post a chart for appropriate weights next to the scale. This is an easy way to communicate with your son without having that awkward conversation.
-
2
Schedule an appointment with your doctor for your son. Before going to the appointment, discuss the fears that you have about your son's weight with your doctor and ask him to relay information to your child about his weight.

3
Have a one-on-one conversation with your son and express your legitimate concerns. Do not speak at your son, but instead speak with him. Ask if he has any concerns about his weight, and if there is anything you can do to help work toward a healthier number on the scale.
-
4
Understand that this conversation may put your child on the defensive and can potentially hurt his feelings. While these short-term effects are unpleasant, in the long run the conversation will have been worth it. Instead of shying away for fear of hurting your son, prepare yourself for his reaction and work through it.

5
Work with your son to incorporate better lifestyle habits. If that means getting on a family workout routine or keeping fatty foods out of the kitchen, then do it.
