How to Find a Product Key for a CD

Most modern software includes a key that you have to enter to properly install the software. Without this key, it may even be impossible to install the program. Most of the time, you can find this product key on the CD holder itself. Knowing places where the product key might be will make installing software much more convenient.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the back of the CD holder. If your software came in a box or other bundle, chances are that is where you will find a sticker indicating the product key for that particular disc.

    • 2

Open the CD holder and look inside the case. Another typical place for a product key is a slip of paper inside the CD holder itself, and you may find the key on it.

    • 3

Flip through the manual that comes with the CD. Sometimes the product key is printed inside the manual or quick start guide that companies include with their CDs.

    • 4

Remove the CD from the CD case holder. There may be a sticker underneath it containing the product key.

Tips & Warnings

  • The product key might also be included as a separate document in your software materials. Check the software materials if you still cannot find it.

  • Make sure the number you are using is the product key. The UPC code under the barcode on the CD holder is not the product key.

  • Do not try to use a fake product key or a product key someone else has used, as it may not work.
