Hole 15 - The Lucky Slap

The Championship Course at Carnoustie Golf Club, home of the British Open, is widely accepted as the most challenging course in Britain, if not the world. But - in the words of Tiger Woods, "The golf course is hard, but it's fair. I think it's a fantastic test." Are you feeling up to that test? Read on to find out how you can pay golf there.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The best times to play at Carnoustie begin in October and run until March. But - that does mean having to endure the infamous Scottish weather!

  2. Step 2

Golfing package holidays are available and these can be especially good value for an avid golfer. These often will allow you to play at more than one course so you may be able to enjoy Carnoustie, Gleneagles and the historic St Andrews clubs on one trip. A full list of tour operators can be found in resources.

  3. Step 3

While staying in the area, you should plan to spend some time in the charming town of Angus. You may be interested to know that nearby Glamis Castle, which dates back to the 14th century, is open to the public. The castle was the birthplace and childhood home of the late HRH Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

  4. Step 4

Of course your trip to Carnoustie can be combined with visits - by rental car or train - to other Scottish cities, such as Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow.

  5. Step 5

London is just a short flight from any of these locations. There are a number of airlines operating from Glasgow and Edinburgh, including EasyJet, that will take you to London. Flight prices vary - so book ahead to keep costs low. The flight time is approx. 90 minutes from both locations.

  6. Step 6

With regard to flights...If you're booking yourself, do check out the list of airlines offering flights to Scotland directly. Glasgow and Edinburgh are very well serviced by international airports. There's nothing worse than airport transfers with luggage and clubs in tow.

  7. Step 7

You can pay your green fees and make your travel arrangements independently. In resources, follow the Carnoustie Golf Club online booking link and you can book your round on the Championship Course and/or the Club's other course: Burnside Links and Buddon Links.

  8. Step 8

When it comes to booking hotels, there a number within the vicinity of the course. The Carnoustie Golf Hotel and Spa (see Resources) is a top choice for convenience. Rooms are offered on a bed and breakfast basis, but there is an option of dinner, bed and breakfast.

  9. Step 9

If you are travelling with golf clubs, you will most likely want travel insurance. But, do read the fine print in your policy as - because of the cost of covering your clubs - you may receive a small payout should you get a hole in one. It's always best to look into this before your travel (or even while you do) so you know how best to provide the evidence necessary.
