If you are new to the job market or to your career then it may be hard to get that first job without any job experience. Job experience is sometimes essential. However, how do you get that experience? Sometimes it takes creativity, but there are ways to get experience so that you can get the job you want.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The best way to get job experience is to participate in internships.

If you are in school, ask about internships. They are the best way to get job experience so that you can easily enter the job market upon graduation. If you are not in college, then contact larger companies to find out what their internship program qualifications are. Most internships require enrollment through a university, but there are some larger companies in certain fields where that is not a requirement.

  2. Step 2

Be willing to start at the bottom or in another job just to get your foot in the door at a company.

Once you have your foot in the door, do a great job, network with people in other departments, let people know what your qualifications and plans are, and volunteer for additional responsibilities that will show off your abilities. Getting to know people in the department you would like to work in and then being able to show your skills for the position you want will often give you an edge when there is another opening.

  3. Step 3

    Offer to do volunteer work!

Even Ryan Seacrest reportedly volunteered for his first job position to get experience. This is an easy way to show what you can do. Consider even volunteering for non-profits or anything where you get to work in the area you are targeting. It really does not always matter if you got paid for your experience, as long as you have that experience.

  4. Step 4

Build a portfolio that will show what you can do, even without paid job experience.

A portfolio can showcase examples of your talent or abilities and can speak as loudly as actual job experience. This is especially important if you have a hard time communicating in job interviews, etc. Let your portfolio speak for itself. If you want to work as a writer, then include samples of your writing. If you are in an industry that makes things, then include designs or pictures that showcase those things. A portfolio can be built for almost any career goal.
