How to Do a Healthy Colon Cleanse

Some health care professionals recommend colon cleansing to remove toxins from the body. According to Healing Daily, toxins in the colon can cause conditions such as constipation, poor digestion and abnormal immune system function. Cleansing the colon stimulates the gallbladder, liver and intestines. An at home colon cleanse can also kill and remove intestinal parasites.

      Talk to your doctor about the product and procedure that you are planning to use. According to the Mayo Clinic, colon cleansing can be dangerous, especially if you have health conditions or are taking medication.

      Try natural methods of cleansing your colon. Drink a lot of water, exercise and eat foods high in fiber. These methods act as a natural colon cleanser, can ease constipation, and may make using a commercial colon cleanser unnecessary.

      Fast for a few days before you cleanse. This can consist of drinking only water, or it can include juice made from fresh fruits and vegetables. If you do not want to fast, eat only healthful foods such as raw fruits and vegetables instead of fasting.

      Add a teaspoon each of bentonite clay and psyllium husk to a glass of water. Have another glass of water handy to drink if you would like to after you drink the entire glass of the bentonite and psyllium mixture.

      Increase the number of times you drink the psyllium and bentonite solution gradually. Drink one glass per day for the first three days; two glasses per day for days four and five; three glasses on day six; and four to five glasses on days eight through fourteen. Continue drinking the solution up to five times per day for up to a month or two.

  • If you can not obtain bentonite clay, you can use activated charcoal in its place. Activated charcoal is available at health food stores. Drink a lot of fluids while cleansing your colon to avoid dehydration.
