Help A Family Member With A Drug Addiction

Drug abuse is a debilitating disease that ruins lives especially if the offender is someone you love in your life or your family, though talking about the addiction is difficult, not doing anything about addressing the issue is even worse. There really is no one way to help a family member with a drug addiction rather there are only guidelines that are helpful to hopefully help that individual come to the realization that they need help. Recovery only becomes apparent when the individual that is addicted is ready and willing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    IDENTIFY THE TRUE ROOT

Too often families try to deal with the addiction itself and not the root cause of the addiction. Most of the time family members become drug addicts because they feel that they have no support or no one that is willing to listen and love them. You must first find out what causes your love one to seek out illicit or prescription drugs as a intermediary to escape life, because the root cause is always stemmed in some type of emotional turmoil that is difficult for the individual to deal with.

  2. Step 2

    RELEASE YOUR NEED TO PROTECT

The world works in paradoxes, the more you try to protect the drug addict from their habit the more they seek it out. I know this might sound strange but release your need to protect them from their drug abuse, instead actively try to build a relationship with them so that they don’t feel a sense of judgment from you, the less sense of judgment they feel the more they are willing to trust and follow your guidance.

  3. Step 3

    ALLOW THEM OPTIONS

If step 2 is done correctly you can then seek help for the individual by providing options for them to get help and then allowing them to choose. Most often people avoid the hard choices in life because they feel they have an obligation to be clean. The only way to get around this feeling of obligation is to allow the individual to make a choice to get clean when they are ready, the trick is to keep giving them choices until they make a conscience decision.

  4. Step 4

    NEVER GIVE UP

I don’t believe that no one is hopeless, I know that it can be a frustrating process to deal with however look at it this way, it is an opportunity for you and the one you love to grow and learn patience and love without judgment. There are many places to get help for you and your loved ones, because you are not the only person that has this similar issue. Just as your loved one needs support and guidance so do you, below are a few links to some very helpful sites that can get you started.
