During the colder months, there is nothing quite as festive and warm as a mug of steaming mulled red wine. Making this winter holiday drink is a snap, with just 3 ingredients and a few minutes of your time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Red wine
  • White sugar
  • Mulling spices
  • Saucepan
  • Tea ball or cheesecloth square and twine
  1. Step 1

First, place your mulling spices in either a large tea ball, or a square of cheesecloth, and close it tightly. You generally need about 2 Tbl of spice for each 4 cups of wine, but follow the directions on the package, as well as your own tastebuds!

  2. Step 2

Place the tea ball or cheesecloth into a medium saucepan. Pour in the wine. Add 1/3-1/2 cup sugar, to taste.

  3. Step 3

Bring the wine up to a simmer over medium heat. You don’t want to boil the wine, just warm it up. Steep the spices in the wine for about 10 minutes. Make sure the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove the spices and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a dry red wine, such as a Merlot or Burgundy for mulled wine.
  • Serve in clear, footed mugs to enjoy the beautiful color.
  • The heating and steeping process can be done in a slow cooker. It will take longer to bring the wine to temperature, however. After the spices have steeped, remove them, and keep the wine warm on low heat.
  • You can make your own mulling spices. The mix typically contains cinnamon stick, whole cloves, dried orange peel and whole allspice, but you can add whatever spices you like best.
