Writing poetry can be a lot of fun, but sometimes a writer just gets stuck and can't find words that rhyme. The easy solution, if you have access to the Internet, is to search out online rhyming dictionaries and spend some time reading through them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • access to the internet
  • speakers or headphones (optional)
  1. Step 1

Decide what word in your poem that you want to find a rhyme for. Then, use a search engine such as Google, enter "rhyming dictionary," and see what comes up. Select one or more sites that appeal to you, and open each one in a different tab or window. You may want to compare what words the different rhyming dictionaries present to you before you select a word for your poem.

  2. Step 2

Let's use the word "sweet" as an example. I tried Poetry.com (see reference below) and typed the word into the search box. The dictionary offered words of one syllable and longer for "sweet," including some short phrases.

  3. Step 3

I tried a another online rhyming dictionary at WikiRhymer, which is geared more towards songwriters. Using the word "sweet" again, I got a pure rhymes, near rhymes, and a list of phrases.

  4. Step 4

Now comes the hard part -- select something that appeals to you or fits your poem. If you have any doubts about how the word sounds, check a speaking dictionary that pronounces the word so you can make sure it does rhyme with your word. Have fun!
