Unlike its early predecessors, the latest version of GarageBand features a built-in tuner that makes it easier than ever to tune an instrument before recording it. Whether you are plugging your electric guitar directly into your computer, or miking a cello, the GarageBand tuner is a nimble tool that renders portable electronic tuners a thing of the past. It can discern pitch for a variety of instruments with an easy-to-read LCD display.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • GarageBand software
  • Computer
  • Instrument
  • Instrument cable
  1. Step 1

Connect your instrument to your computer using an instrument cable (or microphone cable, if the instrument is miked).

  2. Step 2

Select a real instrument track in the recording field so you can hear your instrument in the monitors or on headphones.

  3. Step 3

Select "Control" in the GarageBand menu. Then select "Show Tuner" in LCD from the drop-down menu. Alternately, press "Command-F" to make the tuner appear.

  4. Step 4

Play your instrument to illuminate the tuner on the screen. A pitch will light up, with sharp and flat displays indicating whether your instrument is in tune.
