How to Feed to Prevent Wobblers
Wobblers syndrome, also known as cervical vertebral instability (CVI) and as wobblers, is a disease often affecting larger dogs such as Great Danes or Dobermans. It occurs when the canal through which the spinal cord passes fails to grow large enough for the cord. The small space compresses the cord, resulting in weak rear legs. As the name implies, dogs with wobblers often wobble as they walk. While there are no clear causes for the disease, many people believe improper nutrition may play a part in its development.

Talk with your vet to determine the best diet for your dog. Veterinarian Bruce Wittels believes there is a connection between feeding dogs the wrong food and the onset of dog diseases and symptoms, including Wobblers. Large breed dogs tend to grow very quickly in the first few months of life, which can contribute to the problem, especially if you use a dog food with nutrients promoting growth.

2
Consider whether you should use homemade dog foods. While many pet owners believe making food provides better nutrients, dogs need a balanced meal. Failing to provide one can contribute to the onset of diseases. For example, using liver to make dog food can lead to vitamin A toxicity. People who want to make their own homemade food need to consult with a reliable source, like the Merck Veterinarian Manual or the Association of American Feed Controls Officials, in order to determine the correct ratio of nutrients to use in the food.

Purchase foods recommended by canine nutritionists and breeders. Linda Arnt, owner of Great Dane Lady, is a breeder who recommends following the Blackwatch Feed Program. The program recommends Precise Super Premium Adult Dog Food. Many breeders, while not recommending a specific company, do recommend using adult food instead of puppy formulas for large-breed dogs.

Add supplements to your pet's food to prevent symptoms. Supplements like glucosamine with HA, which is a joint support supplement you can buy in a formula for large-breed dogs, may help prevent wobblers syndrome. You can add the supplements directly to the dog food. As natural supplements, too much of the formula shouldn't hurt your dog, but you should follow the dosage recommendations on the packaging.

5
Mix whole-food nutrients into your pet food. Whole-food nutrients replicate the nutrients a dog would get naturally if you left it to fend for itself in nature. Companies that manufacturer products from whole foods claim the products will help combat a variety of symptoms and will improve ligament health. Most whole-food formulas combine a variety of nutrients for optimal results.
