How to Get an Electrical Worker's License in Texas

Becoming an electrical worker is a lucrative career choice, and it will allow you many career options. You may opt to work as part of a maintenance crew, work as an independent contractor for an electrical services company, or start your own business, servicing residential homes and commercial properties. In Texas, it takes quite a bit of work and studying to become an electrical worker.

      Apply for an apprenticeship license online from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation--you must be at least 16 years old. As of 2009, the fee for an electrical apprentice license was $20.

      Complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a master electrician or licensed maintenance electrician.

      Study for the electrician exam--you can get study materials from Mometrix Media or Amazon. The exam will cover safety procedures, state building codes, and how to correctly perform electrical services.

      Take and pass the maintenance electrician exam--you will need to answer at least 70 percent of the exam questions correctly. To find dates and times, call or visit the website of the International Code Council. As of 2009, the exam fee was $50.
