How to Build a Yugioh Deck

From card games to video games to television shows, the Yu Gi Oh! Franchise has invaded popular culture with it's multiple story lines built around dueling with monsters and spells. For players of the Yu Gi Oh! Card game, the path to victory is built around the cards you choose for your deck. These cards are used to stop your opponent's attacks while dealing damage of your own, eventually seeing the duel end with one victor: you. Building your deck is about knowing which cards to add, and which to put away.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase both Yu Gi Oh! Starter decks which features a pre-made set of cards as well as booster packs, which feature nine random cards from a particular series.

    • 2

Buy cards from different sets. For example, pick up a Joey Starter Deck and Elemental Energy booster packs. The more variety you have in your cards, the more choices you'll have when creating a deck.

    • 3

Separate your cards into their three respective types. You should have a pile of monster cards, spell cards, and trap cards.

    • 4

Lay out your monster cards and choose twenty to place in your deck. The monster cards chosen should be based not just on their attack and defense, but also on their skills. For example, while Chaos Necromancer is a level one monster with an attack and defense of zero, his attack raises by 300 for every creature in your graveyard.

    • 5

Add monsters to your deck that will counter the spells and traps of your opponent. Having Jinzo in play will prevent any trap cards from being played, which can leave your opponent without a strategy.

    • 6

Choose ten spell cards from your pile to add into your deck. These spell cards should focus on offense such as Lightning Vortex which destroys all of your opponent's face-up monsters as well as defense such as the Horny of Light which boosts one of your monsters DEF rating by 800.

    • 7

Pair up your spell cards with monster cards. For example, if you cast Amplifier on Jinzo, his trap card effects won't apply to you, leaving you open to litter the battlefield with traps for your opponent.

    • 8

Pick ten trap cards to fill in the rest of your deck. Your trap cards should both prevent your opponent from making moves such as using Spell Shield Type-8. Trap cards sould also damage your opponent, such as Attack and Receive which deals 700 damage to your opponent if he damages your Life Points.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your deck updated. If you play against the same opponents, change up cards in your deck to prevent players from learning your strategy.

  • Play a few rounds with a pre-made starter deck if you're having trouble learning the rules of the game. Once you've seen how the game is played, you'll be able to better construct your own deck.
