How to Create a Brick Walkway
A brick walkway can be a lovely addition to your home. Besides looking wonderful, they last for years with little maintenance. Installing one yourself can be a cost-effective way to update the look of your home. Things You'll Need
- Bricks
- Gravel
- Sand
- Rubber mallet
- Skid-steer excavator
- Vibrating plate compactor
- Plastic edging
- 12-inch landscaping spikes
- Spray paint
- Screed board

Preparing The Area

Mark the exact path your walkway will take with the spray paint.

Excavate to a depth of about 6 inches with the skid-steer excavator.

Lay 3 inches of gravel over the entire area. Compact this gravel with the vibrating plate compactor.

Install plastic edging on the sides of your path. Nail the edging into the ground with 12-inch landscaping spikes.

Fill the area with bedding sand. Level the sand with a screed board. The screed board's length is equal to the width of your walkway, with a longer board screwed to it. The longer board rests on your edging and holds the other board at the depth of your pavers.
Paving The Walkway

Lay your brick pavers between your edging in whatever pattern you choose. Use the rubber mallet to seat the bricks in the bedding sand.

Sweep sand over the entire area to fill the cracks between bricks. Compact using the vibrating plate compactor.

Sweep more sand over the area.
