Instructions

  1. Reduction of Allergens on Pets

    • 1

Bathe your pet regularly with a shampoo specifically formulated for that type of animal. Bathing a pet on a regular basis can cause dry skin from the reduction of natural oils produced by the animal, so you may need to use a moisturizing pet shampoo.

    • 2

Brush your pet daily with a regular brush. This should be executed outdoors or away from your living quarters if possible, because excess hair will be shed into the environment when brushed from the animal.

    • 3

Groom your pet once a week with a special grooming tool called a grooming blade. This instrument, which resembles a very fine toothed comb, removes excess fur that may be caught in the coat of the animal.

    Cleaning the Environment

    • 4

Vacuum your living space daily. Vacuum the floors, corners and furniture, if possible.

If your vacuum has a hose attachment, make sure to target any corners or ornamental moldings on floors or windows that may harbor clusters of pet dander.

    • 5

Mix a solution of warm water and soap, and use your mop to clean any non-fibrous surfaces. This includes walls, windows and hardwood floors. Short pile carpet is also able to be mopped. The fibers of the sponge mop grasp pet fur that may not have been picked up by the vacuum cleaner.

    • 6

Restrict pet access to furniture. If this is not possible, place a sheet on the furniture when it is not in use by people. Remove the sheet when you would like to use your furniture. Be sure to clean or launder the sheet on a regular basis to remove any dander that has accumulated.

    • 7

Restrict your pet's access to certain rooms, particularly the bedroom.

    • 8

Launder or clean your pet's bedding on a regular basis to remove any accumulated dander and fur.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider installing a HEPA air filter into your home to reduce the amount of inhaled allergens.

  • Air conditioning and heating units have the potential to dislodge pet dander and cause it to become airborne. Reduce the use of these items as much as possible and have them cleaned and serviced on a regular basis.
