How to Create Your Own Animated Custom Car

Animation is growing in popularity these days, especially computer-generated animation. Computer animation is seen in commercials, video games and major motion pictures. In the past, if you wanted to create your own computer animation, you would have needed an expensive and complex program like Maya or 3DMax. You would also have needed a powerful computer (or perhaps many computers networked together). But in recent years several programs have come onto the market that are less expensive, as well as less demanding of computer power. They are also less difficult to use. In this article Vue Infinite will be used (in concert with Photoshop for texturing) to produce an animation of a car driving down a city street. You could use programs such as Daz Studio or Poser for the animation, and GIMP instead of Photoshop for the texturing.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a car model from an online 3D model content provider. Save this model to a folder on your computer. Then make a copy of this folder and save it under the name "car customized". This will protect your original download. Also go to the free section at Renderosity and download some of the free city-building models. Open Photoshop. Select "File" and click "Open." In the dialog browse to the "car customized" folder and open the texture file for the car.

    • 2

Click on the "New Layer" icon in the "Layers" panel. Select the "Polygonal Selection" tool and use it to select an area of the car texture you would like to add personal touches to. For instance, you might select the area that is the door of the car so you can add a racing car number to it. Or you could select the top and hood of the car to add a stripe. When you have finished, save your file, using the same name and file type.

    • 3

Open Vue Infinite. Click on "Atmosphere" and select "Load Atmosphere." In the dialog box that opens select the atmosphere and lighting you want to use in your animation. Then click "OK."

    • 4

Select "File" and click "Import." In the dialog browse to the buildings you downloaded and bring them into the scene. Use the positioning arrows you see on each object to place them where you want in the scene. Now import the car as well, making sure you bring in the customized version.

    • 5

With the car selected in the objects listed in the lower right, click on the "Animation Wizard" icon at the top. In the dialog that opens select "Automobile" and define the path you want the car to follow as it drives though the city. When you are done click "OK."

    • 6

Use the camera positioning tool on the right to put the camera where you want it for the animation. Then click on the "Render Animation" icon in the timeline and select your size and quality settings, as well as your file type and the name of the file. Then click "Render Animation."
