Instructions

    • 1

Gather the items you will need in advance. Purchase icing, fondant and any decorative candy such as red hots to have on hand before you begin.

    • 2

Decide on a shape for the cake. Use a large triangle next to a small square to evoke the shape of a tree. Three circles placed next to each other can serve as a snowman. A large square cake can serve as the base of a wrapped Christmas present. A standard rectangular or circular cake can be a blank canvas to show off elaborately crafted decorations.

    • 3

Place a layer of icing or fondant on the top of the cake before you start. Use green, red or white topping on the cake to suggest the season. If you are using green, use light green to suggest mint or dark green to call to mind a wintry pine forest. Use a bright red rather than one with pink or white overtones underneath. If you want to use white, find the brightest white to remind people of newly fallen snow.

    • 4

Make cake decorations. Bake six large gingerbread cookies. Top the cookies with edible silver or gold sprinkles. Attach the cookies to the sides and top of the cake with royal icing. Create poinsettia flowers from bright red fondant. Add leaves in green fondant. Place on a white cake. Turn the cake into a present. Cut out a large bow from fondant and place across the entire cake. Pipe icing in a decorative scroll pattern where the fondant does not touch the cake.

    • 5

Use cut-up fruit. Make a decorative wreath around the center of the cake. Cut strawberries into thin slices and layer them on the top of a white cake. Make petals for the wreath out of green pear slices. Preserve the fruit with a thin coating of gelatin dessert.

    • 6

Add holiday candies. Unwrap circular mints and candy canes. Alternate candy canes and mints on the top and sides of a white iced round cake to form a pattern.

    • 7

Pipe red gel to spell Merry Christmas across the surface of the cake. Add a bright green Christmas tree to one side adjacent to the message. Decorate the sides of the cake with a wreath of bright green gel to represent boughs of holly. Place a small edible gold ball in middle of each wreath.
