When a lamp won't work, even after you've replaced the light bulb, the socket is often to blame. Household light bulbs that use alternating current from wall receptacles have two wires that attach with screw terminals. Wire a new socket and use it to shed light on your next project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Turn off the lamp and unplug it. Keep the power cord unplugged until the lamp is completely reassembled.

  2. Step 2

Disassemble the upper lamp around the light socket. Remove the lampshade, light bulb and any hardware attached to the sleeve of the bulb socket.

  3. Step 3

Take the sleeve off of the outside of the socket. Some sleeve assemblies are threaded and must twist off, others are secured by pressure around the insulator and must be pinched at the top to in order to slip them off. Unscrew the sleeve housing or pinch it and pull upward. Slip off the insulator sleeve by pulling it upward.

  4. Step 4

Pull the bulb socket upward to force some of the wire to come up through the lamp stand. Unscrew the terminals with a Phillips screwdriver and pull off the wires. Untie the knot in the wires.

  5. Step 5

Prepare the wire ends for connection. Cut off the exposed wires. Strip the wire ends to expose 1/2 inch of fresh wire. Use wire cutters to splice through the insulation and remove 1/2 inch of the outer jacket. Tie the wires in a knot with 1 inch of the ends that are free for connection.

  6. Step 6

Loosen the terminal screws on the new socket in two full counterclockwise rotations. Twist the wire with the ribbed jacket around the silver terminal screw in clockwise rotation. Tighten the terminal with all exposed wire contained under the screw head. Twist the wire with the smooth jacket around the gold or copper colored terminal screw and secure it tightly under the screw head.

  7. Step 7

Assemble the lamp. Push the wires back into the lamp stand and set the new socket in place. Slip the insulator sleeve over the the socket. Pinch and push, or screw the outer sleeve housing over the insulator. Replace the lampshade, hardware and light bulb. Plug in the lamp and turn on the switch to see the light.
