1
Identify flowers for cutting by looking for blossoms not fully developed. The petals should still be in somewhat of a bud form to allow the petals to expand indoors.
-
2
Plan to cut blossoms in the early morning or late evening so that you remove them when they have the most water in their stems, which keeps petals from deforming.

3
Hold the flower gently and use a sharp knife to cut the blossom from the plant. Never squeeze or rip the stem because it will stop water from traveling up to the blossom. Immediately place the cut flower(s) in a container of warm water to submerge the stem and allow it to soak up as much water as possible. Leave the flower in the container for two hours. If your blossoms arrived as a gift in a box, perform this step.

4
Re-cut the soaked flower stem by holding it at an angle underneath the water and remove an inch from the bottom. This ensures that the stem has no clogged cells that prevent the flower from absorbing water. If your cut flowers came to you as a gift in a vase, complete this step.
-
5
Place the flowers in vase filled with warm water and continue to re-cut the stem(s) every third day by repeating step four, or by holding it under warm, running water.
