How to Sow Adenium Seeds
The desert rose is a beautiful desert plant designed to withstand the driest, hottest climates. It is closely related to the oleander plant and is a pretty flowering shrub. The desert rose originates in Africa and the Middle East, but does very well in the drier United States regions. The height of the mature desert rose is anywhere from two to five feet tall. Within three to five years, the desert rose can grow to become a high-coverage shrub. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Perlite growing mix or vermiculite
- Growing tray
- Heating pad
- Small peat pots
- Potting soil
- Trowel
- Large pots or flower bed

Take the seeds and scatter them across a growing tray filled with perlite growing mix or vermiculite. The seeds will blow away easily, so use caution when placing them in the soil. Cover with a thin layer of the same growing soil. Water until moist.

Place the growing tray on a heating pad in a warm, sunny spot. Set the heating pad to 85 degrees. Allow the seeds to germinate for one week to three weeks, watering every three days. If some seeds are not sprouted at the end of three weeks, they should be discarded.

Move the seedlings into small peat pots filled with 1/2 vermiculite and 1/2 potting soil. Place in an area that receives full sun. At this point, water the plants from below only. Do not pour water directly onto the plant stems. Just water the dirt around the plants. Do not over water the plants. The desert rose need to be well drained at all times.

Take the desert rose plants outdoors during late spring. Plant in large pots or directly into flower beds. Ensure the beds receive full sun and that the dirt has excellent drainage.

Tips & Warnings
The desert rose grows best in climates that do not have harsh freezes. Temperatures less than freezing point can damage the plant. If your area has numerous freezes it is best to take the plant indoors through the winter.
Water the plants only when necessary. For most locations, the desert rose will need no external watering. However, in the driest climates, the roses should be watered every one to two weeks.
The oil in the desert rose plant is poisonous to animals and humans. Do not use any part of the desert rose plant in or around food.
