How to Transplant a Eucalyptus Tree

Eucalyptus refers to many types of trees with fragrant oil and thick leaves. Eucalyptus globulus, native to Australia and rampant throughout California and the Southeastern U.S., is one of the most well known varietals. Eucalyptus globulus has thin papery skin in mottled shades of brown and elongated oval leaves in bright and olive shades of green. These trees grow quite tall--as much as 200 feet-- and can thrive in full sun or part sun environments. While Eucalyptus globulus is a hardy tree once planted, mature trees do not transplant well. If you're introducing eucalyptus trees into your home, start with a sapling. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find a proper place in your yard to transplant your eucalyptus tree and dig a hole with the shovel. Make your hole twice as large as the eucalyptus sapling's root ball.

    • 2

Remove your sapling from its plastic container. If you are transplanting a eucalyptus within your yard instead of a sapling, dig up the settled tree and carry it to your intended planting location.

    • 3

Place the sapling in the hole, making sure it's vertically straight so that the root system can grow straight into the earth.

    • 4

Cover the hole with potting soil or other well-draining and nutrient-rich soil. You should have a small mound around the base of your eucalyptus when you finish.

    • 5

Water the sapling thoroughly and clean up the work area.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, purchase a young eucalyptus sapling from a nursery rather than transplanting another eucalyptus already growing in your area.

  • Do not transplant a eucalyptus that is taller than 18 inches.
