How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter
Eating a healthy meal is bliss. Doing the dishes afterward is not. Dishwashers were created with this in mind. Occasionally, however, they need routine maintenance. If the last few loads of dishes have come out looking less clean than normal, perhaps it is time to clean the filter. Whether the model is a Kenmore, Frigidaire or KitchenAid, this is a quick and simple process. Does this Spark an idea?

- Sponge

Instructions

1
Pour a quart of white vinegar into the empty dishwasher. Run the dishwasher through a normal wash cycle.
-
2
Open the dishwasher door and remove the dish racks. Locate the filter along the bottom of the compartment. Use a sponge to wipe away any residue that has formed around the outer edges.
-
-
3
Unscrew and remove the filter housing. Clean the compartment by first visually inspecting for any debris and removing it. Note that some dishwashers are not designed to provide access to the filtration system. If this is the case, skip to Step 5.
-
4
Disassemble the filter housing over the sink. Flush it with soap and water. If any debris remains, use the thin brush to scrub the filter before flushing it once more. White vinegar can be used to remove stubborn debris and further clean the filter. Reassemble the filter and place it back inside its compartment in the dishwasher.
-
5
Mix a cup of bleach, a half cup of baking soda and a half cup of salt. Pour this mixture inside the dishwasher. Let the mixture sit for the night. In the morning, start the dishwasher and run it through a normal wash cycle.

Tips & Warnings
There is no single standard for dishwasher design, and models vary greatly. Consult the manufacturer's information for your model for detailed information on maintenance.
If your dishes are still not clean after you clean the filter, then check the water inlet valve. It may need to be replaced.
