How to Clean Pet Dander in a Home
The Mayo Clinic notes that pet dander can remain in a home for weeks -- even months -- after the pet is no longer present. Thorough housekeeping is necessary to remove the dander but, should you decide to keep your furry family member, there are also ways to reduce your exposure to the pet dander. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, air purifiers or vacuums
- New bedding
- New furniture (if upholstered)
- New carpeting or flooring
- Allergen-neutralizing cleansers
- Sponges or washing rags
- Allergen barriers (pillow cases, mattress pads)
- Anti-allergen pet shampoo

If a Pet is Rehomed
-
1
Replace carpeting (especially in bedrooms), upholstered furniture and other soft furnishings, such as curtains or drapery, advises the Mayo Clinic. If you choose to keep upholstered furniture, move it out of bedrooms and into other areas of the home.
-
2
Purchase new bedding, including sheets, comforters, blankets, pillows, and even mattress sets. If the cost of new pillows and mattresses is prohibitive, cover the old ones with allergen barriers (mattress pads and pillow cases).

-
3
Clean hard surfaces thoroughly, including walls with wash rags or sponges. Use cleaning products made specifically to neutralize pet dander and other allergens, such as dust mites.
-
4
Remove pet dander by improving air quality. The Mayo Clinic notes that use of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, air purifiers and vacuums can reduce these airborne allergens.
If Your Pet Stays With You
-
5
Remove carpeting and replace it with hard flooring, such as tile, wood or linoleum, as bare floors are easier to keep clean. If you want your home carpeted, choose a type with a short pile or use area rugs that can be washed.
-
6
Use HEPA purifiers or a cleaner with an electrostatic filter, as well as vent filters. The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America notes that air purifiers should be left on for at least four hours daily.
-
7
Make your bedroom off limits to pets to reduce the presence of dander in your sleeping area. Restrict your pet to certain areas in the house, advises the Mayo Clinic. Alternately, consider keeping the pet outdoors.
-
8
Bathe your pet weekly using a shampoo formulated to neutralize dander. This chore, as well as other grooming tasks, should be delegated to someone who doesn't have pet allergies.
