Instructions

    • 1

Add a few handfuls of compost, shredded leaves or other organic material to the soil around plants monthly. This will add nutrients to the soil. Work into the soil loosely with a rake or trowel, taking care not to disturb the roots.

    • 2

Apply rose-specific fertilizer once new growth appears. Follow label directions carefully as misapplication will cause more harm than good. Some fertilizers, such as Bayer All-in-One Rose and Flower Care Concentrate, are liquid and are added when watering the plant. Others, like Miracle-Gro Rose Food, come in pellet form and are sprinkled over the ground around the plant. Liquid and pellet forms work equally well; liquid formulas are usually applied more often than pellets.

    • 3

Water rose bush thoroughly once or twice per week, depending on rainfall. Rose bushes need 4 to 5 gallons of water each week during the growing season. Always water deeply at the base of the plant. Shallow watering will encourage weaker roots. Proper water levels will ensure healthier plants.
