How to Dispose of a Recliner

Whether you are redecorating or just sick of it, when it's time for that old recliner to go, you might find yourself in a quandary. It's bulky and heavy, and unless you have a truck, hauling it to the city dump yourself might be too difficult. You probably want to avoid spending money on a chair you are throwing away, and if you must spend anything, you'll want it to be as little as possible. When it comes to getting rid of your recliner, to keep the trouble and expense to a minimum.

1. Offer your old recliner to charity or for free to any takers if you feel it is still in good enough shape to use. Charities like the Salvation Army or Goodwill will arrange a convenient pickup time with you. Alternately, put an ad in a local flier, on a website like Craigslist.org or Freecycle.org, offering the recliner to the first person willing to haul it away.

2. Ask your furniture salesperson, if you are purchasing a new recliner, if they have removal services. Some stores have furniture disposal services and are willing to take away your old furniture when they deliver your new furniture, for free or for a small fee.

3. Bring your recliner to the curb. If you are unable to move it yourself, hire a handyman or someone in your neighborhood who does odd jobs to carry it out of your home for you. Place a sign on it that says, "Free!" Unless it is badly broken, it will most likely be gone in a day or two.

4. Contact your county's Municipal Utilities Authority to inquire about furniture disposal if all else fails. They will often schedule a time to pickup your recliner, or tell you the standard bulk pickup times. They will also let you know if there will be a fee for the extra labor.
