How to Braid Cotton Cord

Braiding cords is a great way to make attractive, colored ropes. Creating a box braid out of cotton cord provides a sturdy cord with plenty of room for customization, as you can change the colors of the cords to create different mixes. The box braid is a beginner's braid which can be completed by crafters who are new to braiding, but still produces an attractive final product.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two equal length pieces of cotton cord. Try mixing and matching colors to change your final product.

    • 2

Lay the pieces of cord on the ground in the shape of a cross, with both cords passing over the center of the other cord.

    • 3

Grab the two ends of the bottom cord and bend them over the top cord to create two loops.

    • 4

Take one end of the top cord and weave it over the loop closest to that end and under the other loop.

    • 5

Take the other end of the top cord and weave it over the loop closest to it, and under the loop further from it. This end should go over the loop the other end went under, and under the other loop.

    • 6

Grab one end of the top cord and the end of the bottom cord in one hand, and the remaining ends of each cord in the other, and pull the braid tight.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 3 through 6 until your lanyard reaches the desired length. Tie off the ends.
