How to Stop Spray Gun Spitting

Spray guns are great for painting interior walls, cabinets, exterior walls and furniture. They apply an even coat to the painting surface and painting time is much quicker compared to using brushes and rollers. One of the common problems with spray guns is the gun spitting paint, causing excess paint drops and debris to stick to the painting surface. The main causes of this are dried paint clogging the tip and paint that has not been thinned. You can fix your spray gun from spitting and prevent it from spitting in the future with a few easy steps.

    • 1

Remove the nozzle of your spray gun and remove the needle valve from your spray gun.

    • 2

Pour some mineral spirits in a small cup.

    • 3

Dip the toothbrush in the cup of mineral spirits to get it wet.

    • 4

Using the toothbrush scrub the needle valve, nozzle and any areas where the needle valve and nozzle sit on the spray gun.

    • 5

Scrub off the dried paint and debris and wipe with rag.

    • 6

Wash off any paint debris from your toothbrush in the cup of mineral spirits.

    • 7

Repeat steps 3-6 until the needle, nozzle and paint gun are clean of any paint and debris.

    • 8

Place the needle and nozzle back onto your spray gun.

    • 9

When you're ready to paint with the paint gun, thin the paint with paint thinner for oil-based paints or water for water-based acrylic paints to prevent your gun from spitting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your paint should be a mixture of 30 percent thinner to 70 percent paint to prevent spitting.

  • After each use of your spray gun, replace the paint with mineral spirits and spray the gun until the liquid coming out is clear. This will prevent paint from drying and clogging your paint gun.

  • Thinning your paint more than 30 percent can cause the paint to run on your painting surface.
