Make sure you are applying the correct pressure if you find you are removing too much, or too little material. Use your instincts and practice getting adequate results.

Make sure that you aren't forcing the tool against the grinding wheel if you experience overheating. Other overheating issues can be caused if you do not use the coolant tray. Keep the tool cool---a pan of water will work too. The coolant tray is under the on/off switch on some grinders. It should be marked.

Check your grinding approach. Make sure the grinding wheel rotates into the object you're grinding. Grinding takes a lot of practice. If your results aren't as good as you'd like them to be, keep practicing. Use dry runs with the grinder off.

Use the V-groove work rest when you're sharpening drill bits. The drill bit should maintain the original cutting angle and the V-groove will help you keep it.

Make sure you're sharpening only one edge of a lawnmower blade, and are sharpening both cutting ends. Balance the blade on a screwdriver clamped in a vise and remove material if it doesn't balance. An unbalanced blade can cause vibration and damage the mower.

Avoid using solvents around plastic parts if you notice plastic damage.

Dress the wheel if it looses its sharpness or the face loses its trueness. You can buy a wheel dressing tool. Press the dresser against the wheel after you've turned on the grinder. Move the dresser from side to side.
