Step 1
The first thing you want to do is get a bachelor's degree in journalism.
-
Step 2
The second thing you to do is get a job working for the local news paper. It isn't as important what the job is at the paper. For example it doesn't have to be as the sports reporter or staff writer immediately. Unfortunately, a lot of times in the journalism field, especially broadcast journalism they require you to start from the bottom. A college degree isn't going to automatically get your dream job, employers will want you to have some experience working in a news station or working for a newspaper. Internships are great.

Step 3
The third thing you want to do is get a job as a sports staff writer or reporter.
-
Step 4
The fourth thing you want to do is be patient. Now is the time to breathe and relax a little bit. You want to settle into your job and become experienced. Stay at your position for at least a year before moving on to the next step.
-
Step 5
The fifth thing you want to do is read a few posts from Doug Haller's blog at http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/DougHaller. This is a good step because Doug Haller is doing what you want to do. He has a sports blog that is both sponsored and published by a local newspaper. In his case it's "The Arizona Republic" and their accompanying web site azcentral.com. Read his profile page at http://www.azcentral.com/members/User/DougHaller. You will find that his profile page reflects some of the steps before mentioned.

Step 6
The sixth thing you want to do is start blogging about sports. Use a free blogging service like blogger.com. Write about 10 entries.
-
Step 7
The seventh thing you want to do is bring your blog to the attention of your manager or editor at the newspaper. You want to ask to have your blog attached to the newspaper. You want to ask to have it sponsored and published by the newspaper. You should be in great shape because you are an employee of the newspaper, a sports writer for the paper and you have a work sample showing exactly what you plan to do.
