How to Create Jumbo Rock Salt
Jumbo rock salt is a larger version of rock salt that is used in homemade ice cream makers. It can also be used to dissolve ice on driveways and walkways. Creating jumbo rock salt at home is a simple process that in a pinch, will provide the materials to make ice cream or turn a dangerous sidewalk into a safe one. Things You'll Need
- Table salt
- Large pot
- Water
- Stovetop
- Long, wooden spoon
- Large wooden cutting board or surface
- Rubber mallet

Fill the pot about half way with water and allow the water to boil.

Once the water has come to a boil, begin adding the table salt about one-half a cup at a time. After each portion has been added, stir until the salt is completely dissolved, add another half cup and repeat the process.

Continue adding salt and allowing it to dissolve until the substance in the pot contains more salt than water and appears to be a thick mass that you can hardly stir.

Turn off the burner and move the pot off of the heat. Once the mixture has hardened, turn the pan over onto the wooden surface. Gently break the mass with the rubber mallet, allowing pieces to break off in large chunks.
