Step 1
Gifts for the Hard to Buy For People - Gathering Information
There are ways to find out what the ‘hard to buy for person’ would like as a gift. Gather information through these three ways which will provide ideas for what will be a good gift.
• Listen carefully. When talking with the individual they are going to express opinions and tell stories about their likes and dislikes. There are clues in these discussions that can be turned in to gift ideas. If you do not talk directly to the individual, when others are having a conversation ask what they talked about. Example – The person talked about getting tired of the rainy weather and just wishes they could get out in the garden again. Clue – Gardening gifts. Choices are endless but could include tools, knee pads, garden caddy, or a watering can full of fertilizer, garden gloves, seeds, and hand tools.
• Ask Questions. When with the individual you want to buy a gift for ask them their opinion on what you are doing or what is going on around you. Example – When driving by a movie theater point out some of the movies playing and see if there is a positive reaction to going to the movies. Clue – If the individual says they would not set foot in a theater but the movie sounds good a gift for the hard to buy for person could be movie rental gift certificates.
• Good Observation. What does the individual do as a hobby or weekly such as bowling or card club? Each of their activities needs supplies. Example – Grandma goes to a Bridge Club once a week and the rotation brings her friends to her place once a month. Clue – A good gift would be a tea set with matching cups and saucers, new deck of cards with stationary for keeping score, or a monthly delivery of finger food and gourmet coffee. -
Step 2
Gifts for the Hard to Shop For Individuals– A Gift for Everyday Life
For the person who has everything think about what is in most peoples homes and take that item to the next level for a gift. If the female has long hair give a hair brush and mirror set that matches the color of their bathroom or bedroom. A salad bowl with matching serving bowls, in the color of the kitchen, can be used by most individuals. A good set of kitchen knives is something many people do not buy for themselves. Look around the house and buy a really nice, or extremely unique, version of a household item as gifts for hard to shop for people on your Christmas list, for birthday presents, or other celebratory occasions. -
Step 3
Gifts for Hard to Please Individuals
When there is someone on your shopping list that seems to not like anything that is given to them or buys what they want here are gifts ideas which may put a smile on their face. Give a gift of your time:
• to help around the house. This can include cleaning, cooking, baking a favorite recipe together, or sorting through a storage area that has not been touched for years.
• doing maintenance on a vehicle such as changing the oil or wash and waxing it.
• entertaining them with your musical talent or teaching them how to play an instrument.
• teaching them to work on their computer. Many older adults do not know how to open and save pictures, surf the Web, or safely buy something over the Internet.
Use what ever knowledge or skill you have and turn it into a gift they can not refuse.
