My German grandma used to make this traditional German walnut cake with walnuts from the tree in our backyard. It is very rich and has a special, delicious flavor that comes from adding red wine to the batter - a wonderful treat. German food at its best!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablesp. orange zest
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teasp. baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • 3/4 cup red wine
  • 4 tablesp. rum
  • Chocolate + extra walnuts for coating and decorating cake
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease loaf pan.

  2. Step 2

    In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Step 3

    In a second bowl, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Gradually add eggs and orange zest. Stir in flour mixture.

  4. Step 4

    Stir in ground walnuts, red wine, and rum.

  5. Step 5

    Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake cake for around 60 min. or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in pan for at least 10 min.

  6. Step 6

    Melt chocolate. Cover cake with chocolate and decorate with walnut pieces.
