Step 1
Find an old pair of pantyhose or socks that are clean and free of holes on the toe end. Rinse them with water if you have previously used detergents in cleaning to ensure you are not irritating your skin rash further. You should have approximately 12 inches of material to work with.
-
Step 2
Fill the stocking with two cups old fashioned oatmeal. Old fashioned oats will work better than quick oats, but you can use the latter if that is what you have on hand. Adding a teaspoon of dry milk is optional, but can enhance the moisturizing effect of your oatmeal bath.
-
Step 3
Tie stocking just above the top of the oatmeal. You only need to tie it off once, and there should be plenty of fabric left. If you have a shorter length, it is okay, you will need to use a rubber band.
-
Step 4
Run a warm bath, not hot. Hot water can dry the skin and irritate skin rashes even more. A comfortable warm bath is the best method for soothing skin with an oatmeal bath.
-
Step 5
Tie the oatmeal package to the bath tub faucet, so that the warm water is running through your oatmeal pack. Attach with a rubber band if there is not enough room to tie it securely in place.
-
Step 6
Place the oatmeal pack in the water when you have reached the desired depth of water. Let it steep, you will notice the bath water turning a milky white as this occurs.
-
Step 7
Rub the oatmeal pack over your skin rash, squeezing gently to get the most benefit in this skin rash treatment. Do not use soap! Simply rinse with clear, warm water after your oatmeal bath. Air drying should be done so as to not rub off the soothing benefits of your oatmeal bath.
