If you are bothered by mosquitoes during the sweltering summer months, you have likely tried dozens of insect repellents. However, some mosquito repellents contain harsh chemicals. If you have young children at home or if you are just interested in embracing an all-natural lifestyle, you might want to try your hand at making your own bug repellent. One all-natural ingredient that can be effective in keeping the mosquitoes at bay is garlic.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 head of garlic
  • 2 cups olive oil
  • Saute pan
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Beeswax and petroleum jelly (equal parts)
  1. Step 1

Prepare garlic oil by taking an entire head of garlic (peeled) and placing the cloves in 2 cups of olive oil. Simmer in a pan for 15 minutes, and then allow to cool completely.

  2. Step 2

Strain the oil to remove the garlic and any impurities, and discard the solid matter.

  3. Step 3

Combine equal parts petroleum jelly and beeswax with the garlic oil. The ratio should be 1 part garlic oil to 100 parts jelly and beeswax.

  4. Step 4

To use, apply to your arms and legs. According to the Colorado State University Extension, this garlic mixture will repel mosquitoes for up to eight hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • To boost the power of your repellent, add a garlic supplement to your diet. Some people find that this helps to keep mosquitoes at a distance. Garlic is also thought by some to have benefits for your heart as well.
