How to Get Trailing Petunia Seeds From the Plants

Trailing petunias are one of the most popular types of flower sold because they are versatile. They can be used in window baskets, hanging baskets and as filling in flowerbeds. Although petunias can be tricky to start from seed, once established they require little care and flourish throughout the growing season. Obtaining seeds for future planting is easy as long as you have the patience to allow your trailing petunia to turn brown and ripen with seed pods.

Scissors
Paper bag
Tin pie plate
Pen
Quart jar with lid

How to Save Trailing Petunia Seeds

Step 1

Snip seed pods from brown, dry vines. They are inside the remnants of the faded bloom. Place them in a paper bag.
Step 2

Pour seed pods into tin a pie plate, spreading out so they can dry. Allow pods to dry indoors for one to two weeks.
Step 3

Using your fingers, carefully open the seed pods and empty seeds into tin pie plate.
Step 4

Remove chafe remnants from seeds by tilting pie plate to one side, allowing seeds to gather.
Step 5

Return seeds to the paper bag. Label the outside of the bag with the contents and date.
Step 6

Store the bag inside a sealed jar in a cool, dry place free from humidity until ready to plant.
