How to Store Iris Rhizomes

Irises come in many varieties and have underground root structures called rhizomes. Iris rhizomes can usually stay underground during the winter months and do not need to be stored during the winter. However, if you have unplanted rhizomes or decide to dig up planted ones, you will need to properly store them so they survive until you are ready to plant them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the foliage has turned yellowish-brown before cutting it off and digging up your rhizomes. The irises at this point have been able to soak in the sun, convert it to sugar through photosynthesis and store it in the rhizomes for next year's plants.

    • 2

Dust the rhizomes with some sulfur, which is available at most local nurseries. Sulfur will help prevent the rhizomes from rotting and getting diseased.

    • 3

Bury them in an open container filled with slightly moist peat moss.

    • 4

Store the rhizomes in a cool (around 35 degrees F) dark location. Ideal locations are an unheated garage, attic, crawl space or basement.

    • 5

Check on the rhizomes every couple of weeks to be sure they're not rotting or shriveling up. Throw out rotted rhizomes and moisten the peat moss if necessary.
