How to Plant Seeds in a Sponge

Starting seeds on a sponge is one of the easiest ways to begin seeds indoors as you wait for the danger of frost to pass. Since sponge gardening does not require soil, it's also one of the cleanest ways to get an early start on a garden. Indoor sponge gardening is also a wonderful way to allow kids to experience, hands-on, the process of nature in how seeds sprout and grow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bowl half-full with water.

    • 2

Place the sponge in the water and allow it to soak for 2 or 3 minutes.

    • 3

Raise the sponge from the water, holding over the bowl, and squeeze out excess water.

    • 4

Carefully place seeds into the holes and crevices of the sponge.

    • 5

Place the seeded sponge on the plate.

    • 6

Position the plate near a sunny window (either direct or indirect).

    • 7

Monitor daily for sprouting and to observe the moistness of the sponge.

    • 8

Add a tablespoon of water to the plate near the base of the sponge if the sponge begins to dry out.

    • 9

Transplant plants into pots filled with soil, or into an outside garden, when sprouts begin growing roots and leaves.

Tips & Warnings

  • When transplanting, plants can be removed from the sponges by gently pulling them out or by cutting the sponge with a small pair of scissors to keep the plant and sponge intact.

  • In the event you decide to cut the sponges to transplant the plant and the sponge, consider using all-natural, vegetable sponges.
