How to Transfer an AOL Filing Cabinet to a New Computer

The AOL filing cabinet (technically called a Personal Filing Cabinet, or PFC) is a unique America Online email feature that saves your email messages and contacts to your computer. If you purchased a new computer, you'll want to transfer your existing PFC to it--an easy process done via email that takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign on to your AOL account, and choose "Write" at the top of your browser window.

    • 2

Click "Attach." Select the program files directory, and then choose "AOL." Choose "C_America Online."

    • 3

Click the "Organize" folder to open it and view its contents. Select your PFC file from the folder (hint: it's the file sporting the same name as your screen name) and attach it to the email message.

    • 4

Specify an email address that you can check from your new computer as the recipient of the message. Click "Send."

    • 5

Check the email account on the new computer. Download the attachment to your new computer, and place it in the "Organize" subfolder in your AOL folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also burn the AOL filing cabinet to a CD. Once the CD is burned, insert it into the new computer's CD/DVD drive and copy the file from the CD to the "Organize" folder. This is a good option if your new computer doesn't have Internet access yet.
