1
Put on latex gloves. Locate the vein and make sure that it is fully palpitated. Clean the site with an alcohol swab to remove any present bacteria.
-
2
Remove the catheter from the packaging. Stabilize the vein to ensure that it is ready for injection. Insert the stylet into the skin while simultaneously reducing the angle as you further insert it into the vein. Secure the stylet by taping it down to the skin using appropriate gauze and medical tape.

3
Secure the catheter hub into the stylet with your thumb. Make sure the connection is air tight as any air bubbles in the catheter can cause serious medical problems. Connect the IV bag to the catheter.
-
4
Adjust the IV drip to ensure that the vein remains open. The drip rate should be approximately 30-60 mL/hour, or the equivalent of one drop every 5-10 seconds. Place another piece of tape over the catheter to ensure that it does not move.
