Things You'll Need:
- Styrofoam balls
- Paint
- Foam paint brush
- Newspaper
- Push pins
- String
- Dowel or clothes hanger
-
Step 1
Learn the various sizes of the planets and colors that distinguish them from one another. Take note of special features that each planet has so you can duplicate them in your model.
-
Step 2
Purchase Styrofoam balls in multiple sizes to represent the different the planets. Consider purchasing a few extras to allow for errors.
-
Step 3
Use different colored paints and a foam paint brush to coat the Styrofoam balls in their appropriate colors. Dry the painted planets on newspaper in between each coat of paint.
-
Step 4
Paint on the various features of each planet once the first coat of paint is dry. Continuously refer to the pictures of the planets to represent each planet the best you can. For an extra dimension, try using other materials such as pipe cleaners or fabric to make some of the planetary features three dimensional.
-
Step 5
Create the full model of the solar system by using push pins to adhere string to each planet and tying them to either a wood dowel or even a clothes hanger. Take special care to place the planets the appropriate, scaled-down space apart to the make the model as precise as possible.
