Things You'll Need:
- Craft supplies
- Craft tools: scissors, glue gun
- Business cards
- Display for your crafts
-
Step 1
Decide what you would like to make to sell. Your decision may be based on what you are good at making and if you can make your crafts in quantity.
-
Step 2
Consider if your crafts will sell. Ask yourself if people are interested in your crafts. Crafts that were popular last year may have saturated the craft market and are no longer hot items.
-
Step 3
Scan other crafters' items. This will give you a clear idea of what is selling and what isn't. Attend craft shows in your area and some distance away. Observe what items are selling.
-
Step 4
Keep costs in mind. You want to cover your costs and make a profit. Some crafts may cost more than others to make and your profits will reflect that.
-
Step 5
Start small and think about making more than one type of item. Having some diversity in your craft items will help you see what people are interested in, and will increase your chances of selling your crafts. You want to offer different craft items with a range of prices.
-
Step 6
Create something that is different. Research and develop your craft ideas. Look for new and up-to-date ideas through craft magazines, home decorating magazines or craft shows like those on HGTV. Something as simple as creating a custom-made item using a customer's leftover piece of decorating fabric may put you ahead of other crafters making similar items.
-
Step 7
Design quality items. Customers are interested in high-quality crafts that are made well. Loose threads, items that break, bare spots or shoddy workmanship will not sell well and may get returned. You want to develop a solid reputation for well-made craft items.
-
Step 8
Compile your resources for your craft supplies. You want to have the option of working assembly-line style. For example, while one craft item is drying, you can start another.
