Geraniums are hardy perennial flowers that can be planted in gardening zones 4 to 8, which includes all of the mainland United States. There are a dozens of varieties of geraniums, including Dark Lord geraniums, which produce star-shaped purple flowers from late spring through late summer. Geraniums can be planted with any other kind of flowers, shrubs or herbs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dark Lord Geranium seedlings in boxes or pots
  • Spade
  • Watering can or pitcher
  1. Step 1

Plan to plant your Dark Lord Geraniums in late May for best results, according to Hobbs Farms Greenery, which specializes in geraniums.

  2. Step 2

Dig holes for your geraniums in an area that receives lots of sunshine and that drains well. Partial shade will also work for most plants, but geraniums will not grow well in areas that are frequently wet. Dig up the soil so that it is loose and crumbly. Place the geranium plants about four inches apart.

  3. Step 3

Remove your geraniums from their plastic boxes or seeding pots and place the plants into the soil no deeper than they were in their boxes or pots. Press the soil in around the roots and water the plants with two ounces of water for each plant. If you plan to use fertilizer, put it around the roots before watering, and spray off any fertilizer that gets onto the Dark Lord stems or leaves right away to avoid burning the stems and leaves.
