How to Reduce Mucus Production
Mucus is a green or yellow sticky substance that can form as a result of illnesses (such as bronchitis) or from long-term smoking. You can do several things to reduce its production and make it easier to expel.

1
Limit or eliminate dairy in all forms. According to alternative health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, the milk protein casein contributes to mucus production.
-
2
Quit smoking. If you find it difficult to quit on your own, ask your doctor for help. He can suggest programs, medications or other treatments that can help you quit.

3
Inhale steam to break up mucus. This will make it easier to expel through coughing. Adding a few drops of sage or eucalyptus essential oil can enhance this benefit. Cover your head with a towel to capture the steam from the bowl or pot and inhale. Take breaks every so often if it becomes uncomfortable.

4
Eat wasabi, hot mustard or horseradish. The spicy elements in these foods can liquefy mucus secretions. Eat only as much as is tolerable for you.
-
5
Drink lots of fluids. Hydration will thin secretions and make them easier to expel. Water is the best choice.
-
6
Experiment with natural treatments known to help expel and prevent mucus formation. These include peppermint tea, mullein (3,000 mg daily) and lobelia. Drink peppermint tea as desired and only use lobelia under the supervision of an experienced health care provider.

7
Ask your doctor for guidance. Medications or other treatments might be available to you. He can also suggest self-care methods or other helpful information.
