How to Put an Aspirin in the Water for Fresh Flowers

Using fresh flowers to liven up a room requires some maintenance. Putting aspirin in the water can keep flowers looking beautiful for longer periods of time.       Place an aspirin tablet in a clean spoon. Place another spoon on top of the first so the bottom of its bowl is on the aspirin. Hold the bottom utensil firmly. Press down on the top spoon to crush the aspirin.

      Remove the top spoon. Hold the spoon with the crushed aspirin over the top of a flower vase that contains water and brush the aspirin into the vase with your finger. Then add the fresh flowers to the vase.

      Use another aspirin every time you change the water. Wash the vase out before you refill it with room-temperature water, according to Dimar Florist (see resources).

Tips & Warnings

  • When you use aspirin to keep flowers fresh, you don't need to add plant food to the water.

  • Use a regular-strength aspirin. Don't use acetaminophen, ibuprofen or baby aspirin.
