How to Paint a Birdfeeder With Exterior Kilz Paint

  • Newspaper or drop clothes
  • 80- to 120-grit sandpaper
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Metal putty knife
  • 2-inch paintbrush
  • Mineral spirits
  • Exterior Kilz paint

      Spread out newspapers or a heavy duty drop cloth on the ground. Lay the birdfeeder on the newspapers or the heavy duty drop cloth.

      Use the metal putty knife to scrape away any old loose or peeling paint. Use the 80- to 120-grit sandpaper to rub away any remaining loose paint. Use the 80- to 120-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough or splintering wood. Use the blue painter's tape to cover any area on the birdfeeder you do not want painted.

      Use the metal putty knife to open the container of Kilz paint. Remove the cover from the 2-inch paint brush. Use the paintbrush to apply a coat of Kilz paint to the birdfeeder. Use the paintbrush to smooth any drips or runs. Allow the Kilz paint to dry for 1 hour. Apply another coat of Kilz paint. Flip the birdfeeder over and use the paintbrush to apply a coat of Kilz paint. Allow the Kilz paint to dry for 1 hour. Apply another coat of Kilz paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use Kilz spray paint to paint a birdfeeder, but you will need to be extra careful of drips and runs.

  • Paintbrushes used to apply oil-based Kilz paint should only be cleaned with mineral spirits. Never use water as this will ruin the paintbrush.

  • Kilz paint has a strong odor. Make sure you always work in a well-ventilated area.
