Using a frosting or highlighting comb is a quick and easy way to create professional-quality highlights at home. The key to mastering this technique is to keep the highlights to a minimum for a more natural effect. Instructions

    • 1

Mix your hair color or bleach with the developer according to the product's directions in a color-safe or disposable bowl.

    • 2

Start at the front of the head and section off a very thin, diagonal section of hair. Use the tail of your comb for best results.

    • 3

Load the comb with the color or bleach, using the color brush. Apply the color or bleach to the top teeth of the comb, away from the tail end.

    • 4

Angle the comb at a sharp 45 degree, or greater, angle from the section of hair to be highlighted.

    • 5

Sink the teeth into the section of hair, approximately 2 inches away from the scalp.

    • 6

Gently run the comb down through the section of hair to deposit the color or bleach onto the strands.

    • 7

Choose another random, thin section of hair and repeat the application process.

    • 8

Apply the frosting or bleach, as described, throughout the head in random sections.

    • 9

Wait approximately 30 minutes for the color to process. The processing time may be shorter when using bleach.

    • 10

Check the results. Wipe the color or bleach off a section of hair at the back of the head to see the results. When the desired color has been reached, rinse the hair with lukewarm water until all the color or bleach has been rinsed away.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using bleach check the hair often as bleach can lift hair much quicker than hair color.

  • Do not try to create too many highlights. Your highlights look more natural when only a few are applied, with the most concentration being at the front of the hair, near the face.

  • Do not apply too much color or bleach to the highlighting comb or you risk creating "blobs" of lightened hair.
