How to Make a Turkey Club Sandwich

Turkey club sandwiches are easy to make and represent a step up from simpler "just put the meat on the bread" sandwiches. They take a little effort because the bread is toasted and the ingredients need to be arranged in the right order, but the payoff in taste is well worth it. Individual recipes vary, but the best club sandwiches entail a double-decker structure stabilized with a toothpick to keep the ingredients from sliding off. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place three slices of white or sourdough bread in a toaster and toast them to taste. Ideally, the bread should be crisp and light brown.

    • 2

Blend one teaspoon of basil with one tablespoon of mayonnaise in a small bowl until they are thoroughly combined. The basil isn't completely necessary, but it gives the mayonnaise an extra bit of flavor.

    • 3

Spread the basil mayonnaise on one side of each of the bread slices as they emerge from the toaster.

    • 4

Place one ounce of sliced turkey on the mayo side of one slice of bread. Cut a slice of cooked bacon in half and arrange the pieces in a cross pattern on top of the turkey. Cut a leaf of lettuce in half and place a piece above the bacon . Place a single tomato slice on top of the lettuce and a single slice of Swiss cheese on top of the tomato.

    • 5

Put a second piece of bread on top of the stacked ingredients, mayo side down.

    • 6

Repeat Step 4, starting with a new slice of turkey on top of the second piece of bread. Place the third slice of bread on top of the assembled sandwich base when you are done.

    • 7

Place four tooth picks in the bread, arranged as evenly as possible by quarters.

    • 8

Cut the bread into quarters, making sure each resulting quarter has a toothpick in the center.

    • 9

Place the sandwich pieces on a plate, along with a side dish such as potato salad, potato chips or a pickle spear. Serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • These instructions are for a single sandwich. In order to make two or three sandwiches, simply double or triple the amount of perishable ingredients used.

  • Individual ingredients can be swapped out to taste. Gouda and cheddar cheese work well instead of Swiss, and using wheat bread instead of white or sourdough makes for a somewhat healthier alternative. You can remove ingredients you don't like, but the resulting loss of flavor may detract from the club sandwich as a whole.
