Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a condition in which groups of cysts form inside the kidneys. These non-cancerous cysts are circular, fluid-filled sacs and according to Healthscout.com, they affect more than 600,000 Americans. This disease, caused by a genetic defect, has two types. One is passed down by dominant genes, meaning only one parent has to have the disease to pass it to their children, and the other is passed down by recessive genes, meaning both parents must have the disease to pass it down. Eating healthy foods can be a big step in preventing PKD. Fats and salts should be kept at a minimum. A healthy amount of vegetables such as carrots, broccoli or corn should be consumed on a daily basis. Fruits and whole grains should also be incorporated into the regular diet.
