How to Remove Rust From Copper

Copper components are rare on modern automobiles. However, if your vehicle does use any copper for lead connections or for components, and the copper is starting to corrode, you must remove the rust and corrosion. When copper oxidizes, it turns a rusty green color. Unfortunately, copper is soft enough that you must be careful how you remove the rust and corrosion so you don't compromise the integrity of the copper.

  • Steel wool scouring pad (such as S.O.S.)
  • Soap
  • Water

      Scrub the copper with a steel wool scouring pad. Make sure that you completely remove all the corrosion. This will take some "elbow grease" and a lot of time, depending on the amount of corrosion.

      Wash the copper thoroughly with soap and water. Remove any debris created by the scouring pad as well as any corrosion residue.

      Dry the copper component with a clean towel.
