How to Eliminate Ear Wax

Many people are troubled with excess ear wax. Ear wax, or cerumen, protects the inner ear from debris and infection, but too much wax can be unattractive and unsightly. If you have excessive ear wax, there are a few solutions that you can try from the comfort of your home. All these cures can be purchased at your local grocery store for a fraction of the cost of over-the-counter ear removal systems or a visit to the doctor.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baby oil
  • Stool softener
  • Bulb syringe
  • Eye dropper
  • Cotton balls

Instructions

  1. Baking Soda

    • 1

      Dissolve 1 tsp. of baking soda in a cup of warm water.

      Squirt the solution into one ear with a bulb syringe.

      Repeat until the wax softens and a large chunk of it falls from the ear. Perform this procedure in the other ear.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

      With an eye dropper, place three to four drops of hydrogen peroxide into each ear.

      Rinse out the hydrogen peroxide from each ear with a bulb syringe filled with warm water.

      Repeat these steps for several days to completely eliminate the wax. This will not only cleanse the ear of wax, it will also kill any bacteria inside the ear.

    Baby Oil

      Place a few drops of baby oil into each ear.

      Rinse out the oil from each ear with a bulb syringe filled with warm water.

      Repeat these steps for several days, or until the wax has loosened and falls out of each ear.

    Stool softener

      Place liquid stool softener into each ear.

      To ensure no liquid exits the ear canal, place a cotton ball into each ear.

      Repeat these steps for several days, or until the wax has loosened and falls out of each ear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact your doctor if your having trouble removing excess ear wax with these methods.

  • Do not perform any of these ear wax removal techniques if you have a perforated ear drum.
